Record Rain in Japan Kills 6, Strands Thousands

Record rainfall in Japan has killed at least six people and left thousands stranded at Tokyo's airport during the Bon holiday week.

The update

Eastern Japan is grappling with severe weather conditions following a period of record-breaking rainfall. Authorities have described the deluge as “unprecedented.” The storm has cut power to more than 20,000 households and left approximately 7,000 travelers stranded overnight at Tokyo’s Narita airport. Local officials issued a level five emergency warning, the highest alert available, before downgrading it to a level four as conditions stabilized on Friday morning.

Why it matters

This event is occurring during the Bon Buddhist holiday week, one of Japan’s busiest travel periods. The combination of heavy rainfall and high humidity has created unstable atmospheric conditions, leading to widespread disruption of rail services and road networks. The situation highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure during extreme weather events.

What to watch

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities prioritizing life-saving operations. The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of continued landslide and flooding risks. It remains unclear how long power outages will persist or when rail services will fully resume. The final death toll is currently being verified by local authorities.
