Ryanair Window Blowout: Blade Failure Details

A fan-blade-out failure on a Ryanair flight smashed a cabin window, injuring a passenger.

The update

A preliminary report by US investigators details an engine fan-blade-out failure on a Ryanair flight from Greece to Germany. The incident occurred during the climb out after takeoff, causing engine fragments to smash a cabin window. Serbian national Ljubisa Karović was partially sucked out of the opening, suffering serious injuries and shock. His wife and two other passengers held onto his legs for several minutes to prevent him from falling further. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was delegated the investigation by Greek authorities.

Why it matters

Engine blade failures are rare but catastrophic events. This incident highlights the vulnerability of modern aircraft to mechanical failures and the critical importance of rapid crew response to maintain cabin pressure and secure passengers. The NTSB found bird remains and feathers on the broken engine, supporting the theory of a bird strike.

What to watch

Investigators are expected to release a final report detailing the specific type of bird involved and the exact timeline of the blade failure. Aviation safety experts will likely review inspection protocols for engine blades following the incident.
