Europe Witnesses First Total Solar Eclipse in 27 Years

The Update

Europe witnessed its first total solar eclipse in 27 years on August 12, 2026, as the Moon’s shadow swept a narrow path from Greenland through Iceland and northern Spain to a small corner of Portugal. The path of totality — where the Moon completely blocked the Sun — crossed Reykjavik at 5:48 PM local time before reaching Spain’s northern coast around 7:30 PM, turning afternoon into twilight for up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds in some locations.

Millions more across the continent saw a partial eclipse, with the Sun appearing as a crescent from London to Berlin. NASA confirmed the event went as predicted, with clear skies blessing most of the Spanish viewing sites.

Why It Matters

This was Europe’s first total solar eclipse since 1999 — a generational event that drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to the path of totality. Spain’s tourism ministry estimated over 500,000 visitors traveled to northern regions like Galicia and the Basque Country, injecting roughly €200 million into local economies. For scientists, the brief window of totality allowed rare observations of the Sun’s corona, data that helps refine models of solar activity and space weather forecasting.

What to Watch

The next total solar eclipse visible from Europe won’t come until August 2, 2027 — but that one will cross the southern Mediterranean, with totality over Gibraltar, northern Morocco, and Egypt. Spain gets another shot in 2027 too, with the path crossing the country’s southern tip. Eclipse tourism is already booking for that event.
