The Vatican announced Pope Leo XIV will travel to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17. The trip marks his first visit to Latin America as pope. The itinerary includes stops in Montevideo, Paysandu, and Florida in Uruguay; Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján in Argentina; and Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa in Peru.

The visit is a return to the region that shaped much of Leo’s ministry. He spent decades in Peru as a missionary and later as bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo. His stop in Chiclayo is expected to be an emotional highlight. The trip also marks the first papal visit to Argentina and Uruguay in nearly 40 years.

Leo’s return to Chiclayo is likely to be one of the most emotional moments of the tour. Residents of Chiclayo consider the pope one of their own, embracing him as the first “papa chiclayano.” The Argentina leg of the visit is also heavily symbolic, as his predecessor, Pope Francis, never returned to his homeland during his papacy.
